If you really want to get rid of tonsil stones, you need to learn exactly what they are first. Also known as tonsillitis, tonsil stones are little balls of mucus that are often yellow or white in color. They develop when food particles, bacteria, and post nasal drip develop within the pockets of the tonsil crypts.

The more debris, mucus, and food particles accumulate inside the tonsil crypts the larger the balls will become and the more problems they’ll cause. Some of the common issues tonsil stones create when they develop include:

  • excessive coughing
  • bad breath
  • problems with swallowing food
  • sleeping problems

Due to the issues above it is vital that if you believe you have tonsil stones you get rid of them as soon as possible. The longer this problem goes untreated the longer you will experience the above issues and the worse they’ll become. Most people that notice they have tonsil stones immediately start trying to get them out using their fingers or another object that can reach them.

The problem many people experience when they try to knock out the tonsil stones is that they mistakenly swallow the stones instead of spitting them out. Swallowing the stones is actually what leads to the development of bad breath or halitosis. Never swallow the tonsil stones once you remove them! With that being said, let’s take a look at some of the most effective ways to get rid of tonsil stones without surgery.

One way to get rid of tonsil stones without surgery is to use a Q-Tip to get them out. Simply grab a clean Q-tip and use it to poke at the tonsil stones lodged towards the back of your throat. Be gentle as you poke at the stones and when they finally do fall out spit them out quickly. After you get done dislodging the stones from your tonsil crypts use a mouthwash and gargle your mouth. You want to make sure you don’t leave any dislodged tonsil stones inside your mouth when finished.

Another simple way to dislodge tonsil stones is to use the back of your toothbrush. Grab your toothbrush and flip it over to the backside and push it on the stones to loosen them. Once they get released spit them out quickly. Once again, gargle your mouth out using mouthwash to make sure all the stones are out completely.

Using a water pik is a great way to take care of these unwanted balls in your tonsils. You can find a good water pik at your local pharmacy. Just point the water pik device towards the tonsil stones to knock them out. Make sure when you use the water pik device though you set it on the lowest setting so that it gently knocks out the stones.

Finally, one of my favorite ways to get rid of tonsil stones naturally is to do a salt water gargle. The salt water not only helps dislodge the tonsil stones, but also creates an environment in your mouth where the stones can’t grow back too soon. To make the salt water gargle add 2 tablespoons of salt to a cup of warm water. Make sure you mix up the salt water solution properly before using it.

These are the best tonsil stone removal methods to get these little balls of yuck out your mouth. To prevent them from returning keep rinsing your mouth out with salt water or a good mouthwash.
