Postoperative Care After Your Dental Implant Surgery

Dental implants are artificial teeth replacements meant to help patients with cracked, missing, or chipped teeth. Most patients specifically seek Ultratooth in Orlando. It is why specialists insist on the importance of understanding and following postoperative care to help you maintain the integrity of your newly placed dental implant and reduce any complications. Some of the guidelines your dentist will recommend are:

· Care for the Healing Cap

Implants are placed into your jawbone, and they each have a different care regimen. As compared to teeth being removed, your dental implants will appear right at the gum level with a healing cap, which looks like the top of a screw. That healing cap is attached to the implant itself, and your dentist can unscrew it so that another part can be placed into your implant. You must not disturb that healing screw with your tongue. If you push on the implant healing cap, your tongue is a solid muscle that could loosen the implant. It would be best if you keep your tongue on the other side of your mouth for the first couple of weeks.

· What to Do With the Gauze

Several days after the procedure, your dentist will send you home biting on some gauze. When you get home, you can take the gauze out, and you can leave it out. You do not need to put it back in. It would be a good idea to take pain medicine, which your doctor will prescribe.

· Hygiene

Once the implants are placed, it is essential that you still brush your teeth but not on the implant’s area. It is also very critical that you use a manual toothbrush, not an electric toothbrush, as the electric toothbrush can disturb the integration of the implant. You can start rinsing with a mouthwash the following day. However, do light rinsing because too much can cause the area to bleed.

· How to Reduce Bleeding, Swelling, and Bruising

Typically, you ooze a little blood for a day or two as far as bleeding goes. You might think you are bleeding a lot, but most of it is saliva. A little bit of blood makes your saliva pink, and you will drool a lot.

Over the next several days, you will also have some swelling. It is important to use ice on your cheek, and the swelling will start to go down. Therefore, you must use the ice for the following three or four days to minimize swelling and bruising.

· Eat Soft Foods

Ensure that you chew on soft foods to prevent mechanical damage to the area of the implant. Once discomfort and swelling have improved, you can go back to eating more solid foods.

The healing period of your dental implant is a critical process. As long as you follow your dentist’s instructions, you are going to have a great result. Contact Orlando Center for Cosmetic Dentistry to schedule a dental implant appointment.
