Coaching A Youth Sports Team

Whether you have your own kids playing sports or you just love helping out kids in your community as they learn and grow, coaching a youth sports team might be something you wind up doing in your life. So to help ensure this is an experience that is just as beneficial to your team as it is for you, here are three tips for coaching a youth sports team.

Focus On Just The Fundamentals

While you might have a lot of experience playing or coaching this sport, what you really need to focus on when coaching a youth sports team is the fundamentals. Without the fundamentals, you can’t hope for your players to ever be able to effectively build on what they know and become better athletes.

As part of the fundamentals, make sure your team knows all of the rules of the sport they are playing. Make sure they always have the right equipment they need and that any balls you use are always properly inflated using an air compressor. Once your team knows what they are doing and how to use their bodies to achieve what they need to, you can then start going beyond the fundamentals. But for many youth sports teams, the fundamentals is where you’ll end up staying all season long, so be prepared for this in practice and in games.

Remember The Bigger Lessons You’ll Be Teaching

Along with teaching your players how to play whatever sport you’re coaching, it’s important to remember that it’s more than just the sport that you should be teaching your players.

So much of youth sports is about learning how to be on a team, how to be disciplined, how to train for something physical, and how to exhibit good sportsmanship. Many of these things will be learned not by you teaching or coaching them but by them watching you and how you react to things that happen during the season. Knowing this, it’s vital that you always remember that these young kids see everything you do and hear everything you say, so you’ll want to focus on always being a good example.

Share Your Expectations With Parents

It’s not only the players on your team that you’ll have to deal with. Parents of your players will also be a big part of your team dynamic.

To help ensure that you don’t run into any issues here, it’s best to set your expectations with parents early on in your coaching. Share what will be happening, what is appropriate, and what will help ensure no one runs into any problems during the season. And if you do run into any problems, be ready to address them immediately.

If you’re planning on coaching a youth sports team soon, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you get started.
